BREAKING THE RULES WHEN IT SUITS

Regarding McSweeney vs. Friddell (Another View, June 12):

Reading about Republican Party Chairman McSweeney's ``duty to enforce those rule (of the Republican Party)'' left me between laughing and gagging.

Anyone who was present at the Portsmouth Republican mass meeting on March 27 when Mr. McSweeney personally watched as the ``victors'' broke many of the most fundamental rules of the Republican Party plan will know what I mean.

Then Mr. McSweeney compounded his failure by sending a letter of congratulations to the new chairman of the Portsmouth Republican City Committee, thus ratifying the outrageous breaches of the party plan. That controversy has been since terminated.

By this latest response to Mr. Friddell, Mr. McSweeney unintentionally explains at least one reason why Governor Allen wants a new party chairman: Mr. McSweeney exhibits the same brand of brass and hypocrisy seen daily from President Clinton and his apologists.

Mr. McSweeney calls for enforcing the rules when it suits him or those he favors. So even if Mr. McSweeney is correct vis a vis U.S. Sen. John Warner and Marshall Coleman, his prior record demolishes any weight or persuasive power of his position.
