HARRIET TODD FOOTE

Mrs. Harriet Todd Foote, 93, an Army daughter and widow, born in Fort Monroe, Va., in 1900, died of respiratory failure July 4, 1994, at her home in Virginia Beach.

She was the widow of the late Col. Wm. Cooper Foote, USA (Ret.)

Mrs. Foote was the daughter of Major General Henry D. Todd Jr., USA, who commanded a field artillery brigade through World War I and later the Third Coast Artillery District (Hampton Roads) and the Coast Artillery School at Fort Monroe, Va., and Emma Northrope Greene Todd, a descendant of General Nathaniel Greene of the Revolutionary War. Mrs. Foote's grandfather, Henry D. Todd, who as an officer in the U.S. Navy, saw action in Hampton Roads and was wounded in action on the James River during the Civil War, later served as the chairman of the Physics and Chemistry Department at the U.S. Naval Academy, retiring as director of the Naval Observatory in 1900 with the rank of rear admiral.

Mrs. Foote traveled extensively with her military family visiting Japan and the Great Wall of China when her father was stationed in the Philippines. She attended schools from Manila, Philippines, to Connecticut.

Her husband of 33 years died in 1967. Accompanying him during his career, she lived in the Panama Canal Zone, Fort H.G. Wright on Fishers Island, N.Y., Chicago, Memphis, Washington, D.C., and elsewhere.

Residing for over 40 years in Washington, D.C., she was active in the Junior League of Washington, in the Washington National Cathedral and St. Albans Epsicopal Church, at St. Albans School as president of the Mothers Club, in the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America and in the Society of Daughters of the United States Army and in numerous volunteer efforts. She was a member of the Army Navy Club. She was the great-granddaughter of John Johnson, the last chancellor of Maryland, and she traced her forebearers in this country to the Mayflower.

Mrs. Foote moved to Virginia Beach in 1981 and there was active in All Saints' Episcopal Church and the Hampton Roads Branch of the English-Speaking Union. She was an avid symphony supporter.

She leaves a brother, Harrison T. Todd of Schenectady, N.Y.; a son, Captain Morris C. Foote, USN, on active duty with the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, D.C.; and two grandsons, William Todd Foote of Richmond and James Cooper Foote.

Funeral services will be held at 11a.m. Wednesday, July 6, at All Saints' Episcopal Church, 1968 Woodside Lane, Virginia Beach. Interment will be at Arlington Cemetery. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Road Chapel, is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Army Relief Society or the American Cancer Society. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. today. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
