COMMENT SOUGHT IN CURRITUCK BEACH PLAN

Currituck County wants to make its beaches more attractive to day trippers by building the northern Outer Banks' first public bathhouse and access boardwalk just south of Corolla.

Public comment on the project, which is estimated to cost $100,000, is being sought at today's regular meeting of the Currituck County Board of Commissioners.

``This is part of an overall effort of this and past boards to try and provide more ocean access for mainland residents,'' County Manager Bill Richardson said.

A public hearing is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Currituck County Courthouse. After the hearing, the county commissioners are expected to vote on applying for a $75,000 Coastal Area Management Act grant.

The grant would pay 75 percent of the cost to build the restroom-shower facility and a 30-car parking lot on N.C. 12 at the northern end of the Pine Island subdivision.

Turnpike Properties, developers of Pine Island, is donating 1.6 acres to the county to build the facility.

``If we don't apply for the grant, then the county can't pay for it,'' said Jack Simoneau, Currituck County's planning director.

Bob Gibson, a Charlottesville resident who annually vacations at Currituck's Outer Banks, believes the public access project is a good one.

``I think there should be some public beach up here,'' he said Thursday from Ocean Sands. ``This is a resource that should be enjoyed by everyone.''

Public hearings also will be held Tuesday on the following:

Rezoning a .78-acre tract on U.S. 158 in Powells Point from agricultural to general business. The property is owned by Moses and Jazeney Gallop Heirs.

Rezoning six acres of residential land on U.S. 158 in Point Harbor to agricultural to allow owner James I. Malco to request special use permit for a mining operation on the same property.

Amending the county's Unified Development Ordinance to allow lots with more than 20,000 square feet to have 25 percent lot coverage. In addition, the amendment would include 15 percent added lot coverage for uncovered decks, walkways and pools.

Modifying a special use permit to increase an existing clay and sand mine site by almost an acre on property owned by Doris F. Dozier. The area is on State Route 1118 off U.S. 158 in the Poplar Branch township.

Approving of a sketch plan and special use permit for a 15-lot subdivision on Lou Sawyer Road in the Moyock Township.

Approving a 19-lot sketch plan and special use permit on Knotts Island. The area is on N.C. 615 about a half-mile north of Ferry Dock Road. by CNB
