BEACH TEENAGER HURT IN CRASH DIES OF INJURIES AT HOSPITAL

One of three passengers injured in a weekend car accident on Lynnhaven Parkway died Monday, a police spokesman said.

Jerome Arnold, 17, of the 3900 block of Sunstream Parkway, died about 10 a.m. at Virginia Beach General Hospital.

He had undergone surgery Saturday night after the Subaru in which he was riding sped out of control, tore through a fence and toppled a lamppost that fell on the car, trapping the occupants inside. Because of the weight of the post, heavy-duty rescue equipment was required to free the driver and passengers, police spokesman Lou Thurston said.

The accident occurred at about 1:45 p.m. on Lynnhaven Parkway at Quarter Way.

The youngest passenger, Michael D. Jones, 4, of the 4900 block of Grazing Court, was discharged from Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters on Monday night. The third passenger, Joshua A. Griffin, 17, of the 4500 block of Riviera Drive, was listed in good condition at Virginia Beach General Hospital.

The driver, Corey L. Jones, 17, of the 1300 block of Fundy Court, was listed in serious but stable condition at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Thurston asked that any witnesses who have not spoken to police contact Officer Mark Sumarrel in the Police Department's Special Operations Unit at 427-4606.
