2 CATCHING SAME DOLPHIN NOT FAIR

Sometimes, even in fishing, things aren't always what they seem to be. Take the case of Pat Foster and Matt Paulsen, friends from Virginia Beach.

Foster thought he had caught the fish, a 29-pound dolphin. But Paulsen also was certain he had caught the fish.

Unfortunately, both caught the same fish at the same time, so neither will get a coveted citation award from the Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament.

It happened Sunday, when the two anglers were trolling on the boat Chelsea at Norfolk Canyon, about 65 miles east of Virginia Beach. First one rod bent almost double, then the next. The two anglers reeled but there was only the one fish, a 29-pound dolphin.

Only when they tried to register the catch for a citation at Fishermans Wharf Marina at Rudee Inlet did they learn the hard facts of life. The experience broke several tournament rules, including one which says an angler is to reel his catch to the boat unassisted.

Some anglers were more fortunate, including Tom Chambers of Chesapeake, who caught a 10-pound dolphin from Jeanette's Pier at Nags Head, N.C. Rarely is the fish found less than 15 miles offshore.
