The city's new pay plan would place city workers into 26 ``pay ranges'' depending on the skills, stresses, responsibilities and other factors of their jobs. Range 1 includes the lowest paying jobs like laundry workers. The highest paying job is at 26. Only Deputy City Manager Clarence V. Cuffee is slated for that level.
For each range, there is a minimum and a maximum. Raises would be based on the number in the middle. It's a slow climb after that. It could take as many as 15 years to get from the number in the middle to the maximum.
The proposed pay system doesn't include City Manager James W. Rein, who has a contract with the City Council, and several appointed positions like the city real estate assessor.
It is important to note that the maximum pay rates for the following employees may be lowered by the City Council though they are designed to match comparable wages in other cities. Range 26
