Four area Navy ships will participate in the annual UNITAS exercise with South American navies beginning this week.
The frigate Samuel B. Roberts and destroyer Stump left Norfolk Thursday, and the dock landing ship Ashland left Wednesday. They will join with the tank landing ship La Moure County, which has been at sea since June 20, to begin the circumnavigation of South America.
A fifth ship, the frigate McInerney from Mayport, Fla., also is taking part.
The ships will conduct exercises with the navies of Venezuela, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. by CNB
