DELAYED PLAYERS COULDN'T GET AWAY FROM O.J.

Like anyone in the afternoon half of the field, Glen Day had three hours to kill during a rain delay in the opening round of the Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic Thursday.

When play was delayed at 4:04 p.m. due to thunderstorms, matters weren't helped by television's saturation of the airwaves with O.J. Simpson's preliminary hearing on murder charges.

``(Approximately 75 golfers were in the locker room) trying to waste time and we're left watching the only thing on TV,'' Day said after shooting a 7-under-par 64 which left him three shots off the leading pace of Bob Lohr. ``We turned it to 40 channels and watched O.J.''

Demoralizing as the two-hour, 59-minute delay might have been, it left Kingsmill's River Course rich with birdies for those who continued play until darkness. Day picked up a stroke on two of his three remaining holes.

He and the others on the course at dark will have to contend with a quick turnaround.

``I'll go home, eat, shower, sleep and be right back out here,'' said Day, who finished at 7:30 p.m. and will tee off for his second round at 7:54 a.m.

TEAMWORK: John Wilson kept using the word ``we'' while reviewing his round of 64 with reporters. Someone finally asked him why he continued using a plural pronoun rather than the singular.

``Because it's not just me out there,'' he said. ``It's you and your caddie. He's the one pulling the clubs, giving you the yardage, standing with you on the practice tee.

``I hate to say `I shot a good round,' because when we have a bad score, I always say, `It's me and the caddie who had a bad round.' ''

Wilson's caddie is John Monypeny. It is pronounced, though not spelled like, the name of Q's secretary in the James Bond movies.

It may be stretching things, but this Anheuser-Busch Classic represents a family reunion of sorts for Wilson. The last time he played here, his wife was pregnant with their first child. It was the last tournament she attended before giving birth and she hasn't been to one since.

This week, John, Kathy and Christopher are all attending the tournament, a first for the baby.

CHIP SHOTS: Rex Caldwell, Bobby Cole, Mac O'Grady and Ed Sneed continued the parade of those pulling out. The fourdepartures brought the number of players withdrawing to 10. ... Day earned a measure of fame two weeks ago when he scored two aces in the Greater Hartford Open, scoring the aces in different rounds. by CNB
