The Rev. Warren Francis Taylor, 79, of Sykes Court, died Thursday, July 7, 1994, in Riverside Regional Convalescent Center, Smithfield.
Rev. Taylor, a native of Washington, D.C., was pastor emeritus of Smithfield Baptist Church, where he actively served for 27 years, retiring in 1983.
He was a graduate of Mars Hill College, University of Richmond and Crozer Theological Seminary. He held pastorates in New Jersey, New Martinsville, W.Va., Murfreesboro, N.C., and Smithfield Baptist Church. He taught the Young Adult Sunday School Class, Frank Laubach method of reading and courses for the University of Richmond. He wrote contributing articles in Many Voices and History of Isle of Wight by Helen H. King. He was a charter member and past president of the Gridiron Club, member and past president of Smithfield Rotary Club and Paul Harris Fellow, member and past president of Smithfield Ministerial Group, Isle of Wight Historical Society and member of the National Guard in World War II.
He was a friend and humanitarian to people of all races, colors and creeds, always lending a helping hand in sorrow or in celebration.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Burger Taylor; two daughters, Elizabeth Bateman Lawrence of Newport News and Annette Taylor Harrell of Longwood, Fla.; a son, the Rev. Warren Francis Taylor Jr. of Porterville, Calif.; three brothers, Paul Taylor of West Lanham, Md., Lloyd Taylor of Washington, D.C., and William Taylor of Jupiter, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 11, at Smithfield Baptist Church with Dr. Donald R. Rhoton, Dr. Donald Dunlap and the Rev. Warren F. Taylor Jr. officiating. Burial will be in St. Luke's Memorial Park, Smithfield. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Smithfield Baptist Church Fellowship Hall and suggest memorial donations may be made to the Isle of Wight County Cancer Chapter, Mrs. J.L. Rose, 27882 Walters Highway, Walters, Va. 23481, or The Smithfield Baptist Church Educational Scholarship Fund, 100 Wainwright Drive, Smithfield, Va. 23430. Colonial Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
