GEORGE T. SHORTER

George Thomas Shorter, 72, of the 200 block of Benson Lane, retired owner and operator of G.T. Shorter & Associates Insurance Agency in Chesapeake and Virginia Beach, died July 5, 1994, in Chesapeake.

Mr. Shorter was born in Pittsylvania County, Va., son of the late Lila Mitchell Shorter and Lewis Thomas Shorter, and was a Baptist. He was a 32nd degree Mason of Wilmington Lodge (NU)319, AF & AM, Wilmington, N.C.; Scottish Rite Bodies; Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia; and National Rifle Association. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served as an aviation chief machinists mate.

Survivors include his wife, Diana B. ``Dee'' Shorter; one daughter, Patricia Pitt of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; one son, Thomas Wayne Shorter of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Janice Austin, Roxie Gibson and Bernice McCubbins, all of Danville, Va.; one grandchild, Kimberly Short Liller of Virginia Beach; one great-granddaughter, Ashley Liller of Virginia Beach; four stepgrandchildren; one stepdaughter, Cynthia Stone Linkenhoker of Suffolk; two stepsons, James Richard Stone of Chesapeake and Glenn Wesley Stone of Suffolk; and numerous nieces.

A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Paul D. Moore. The family will be at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel, from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday. Masonic rites and full military honors will be accorded at the grave.
