An infant abandoned in a gym bag at Sentara Hampton General Hospital was placed in foster care Friday as police continued to search for his parents.
The healthy baby boy, who social workers named Jonathan, was left near a stairwell at the hospital on Wednesday. He had been born within the past 24 hours.
Authorities have no leads in the case, police spokesman Ed Barnes said Friday.
If officials are unable to find the child's biological family, he will likely be put up for adoption, although that will require a court order, said Keith Sykes of the Social Services Department.
Sentara spokeswoman Debbie Myers said the baby was in good condition and spent Wednesday and Thursday nights at the hospital while social service officials waited for a court order to get custody of the boy.
Sentara officials reviewed video tapes taken from cameras that are posted at all entrances and exits at the hospital and have sent the tapes away to be enhanced. Police hope the images can be enlarged and made clearer to provide more clues in the case.
