CANDY SELLERS NOT REGISTERED

The State Division of Consumer Affairs is cautioning Norfolk residents about children selling $1 candy bars supposedly on behalf of Kids Against Drugs.

Kids Against Drugs has not registered with the DCA, which is required by the Virginia Solicitation of Contributions Law, the agency said. The DCA also warns contributors that their donations may be used for non-charitable purposes.

According to the DCA, the children selling the candy say they are raising money to keep kids off the streets, to earn a trip for themselves to an amusement park and to benefit groups or schools such as Little Creek Elementary.

Officials with Kids Against Drugs and Little Creek Elementary said they know nothing about the candy sales.

Marion Horsly, manager of Consumer Education, said contributors should make sure a charitable organization is registered with the DCA before making donations.

``The public should be aware of not only this specific group, but also the concept,'' Horsly said. by CNB
