I'm angry over all this chaotic hand-wringing by pseudo-patriots about Oliver North serving as one of our senators. Cries that he does not deserve to serve because he was convicted of lying to Congress, has no integrity and is a puppet of Christian nationalists who aim to put a dagger into the heart of high-minded liberal causes and personal freedoms permeate editorial and opinion pages across the state.
What would Oliver North do as U.S. senator that the rest of the pack would not? Fight, with courage for the tenets of those who sent him to Washington - us.
I believe Virginia should elect a senator who will put his pack on and not take it off until his last day in office. I believe Virginia should elect a fiercely tenacious, articulate and knowledgeable senator with a big dose of common sense - a take-no-prisoner leader.
Why elect someone who will blend in and be a no-problem, roll-over senator who takes direction from arrogant (sic) statesmen with issues, interests and agenda harmful to us as a state and as human beings? We've got that now with both our senators, and we ought to be tired of it.
Going to the Senate is akin to going to war, and I want someone who will champion this state's interests, values and quality of life on the Senate floor; who will take his licks and, when the dust clears, walk away the winner.
On the issue of honesty and integrity: I believe that Mr. North's actions, interests, writings, motives and voting record will be examined to the nth degree, not only by his opponents but by those who really matter - us. Given the microscope Mr. North is wanting to live under, how can he not be totally truthful?
The fire is raging, and it's time to break the glass. Let's let this guy out.
