CLEMONS FOR VICE MAYOR: A GOOD CHOICE

The unanimous selection of Johnny Clemons as vice mayor was a good vote by City Council.

Clemons speaks well and thinks on his feet, skills he attributes in part of his association with the Toastmasters organization. He will represent the city well when he stands in for the mayor.

Recently re-elected to his second term, Clemons is the council maverick. But knows the difference between politics and ceremonial occasions. He no doubt will know when statesmanship is politic.

Clemons also is one of two black council members. By naming him vice mayor, the majority white council signaled an intention to give blacks visibility in affairs of the city.

That too is important as the city embarks on a new year that could be one of the most crucial in Portsmouth's history.
