The city of Chesapeake has been awarded $146,753 in state funds to help fight illegal drugs.
``This money, combined with the comprehensive crime packages passed in the 1994 (General Assembly) session, will give our law enforcement officers the tools they need to win the war on drugs,'' state Sen. Frederick M. Quayle, R-13th, said in a statement earlier this month.
Chesapeake will use the funds for additional investigators, special prosecutors and community policing. Funds for the Intensified Drug Enforcement Assistance Program are generated from a $2 assessment on criminal convictions.
The General Assembly created the fund in 1990 to give additional resources to communities where drug trafficking has become a problem. The program is administered by the state Department of Criminal Justice Services. by CNB
