BOXING: Professional boxing returns to Portsmouth for the first time in six years on July 19.

A Virginia Junior Welterweight kick-boxing championship bout will headline a card at David's Night Club, 430 High Street, at 8 p.m.

Portsmouth's Rickey Fletcher and Richmond's Greg Gallop will meet in the 10-round championship event.

In the co-main event, Carlton West of Portsmouth, Virginia's top-ranked cruiserweight, will face undefeated Joey DeMarco of Pittsburgh. It will be West's first appearance in a home ring in 44 bouts.

Three undefeated Portsmouth fighters will be featured in special six-round bouts. Tuff Tony Pope (4-0) will take on Maxwell Key (8-7), Dorin ``The Destroyer'' Spivey (5-0) will face D.J. Jacobs (12-8-3) and Elvi Alexander (1-0) will fight Andro Cassio (1-1). All five of Spivey's victories have been by knockouts. Three of Pope's four wins were knockouts.

Pope, Spivey and Alexander are considered among the top pro prospects in Virginia.

Latin sensation Jose Santos Lastra will make his first local appearance in a special bout.

All seats are $20 and there is limited seating. Doors will open at 7 p.m.

Tickets are on sale at the Portsmouth Athletic Club on Broad Street, Nick's Hot Dogs on Rodman Avenue and at David's.

There also will be an amateur ring girls competition with $100 awarded to the winner.

MORE BOXING: A card headlined by a bout between Portsmouth's Dorin Spivey and Joe Everett of Virginia Beach has been rescheduled for Thursday, July 14 at the Peppermint Beach Club in Virginia Beach.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. For information, call 491-2582.

TENNIS: Entries are now being accepted for the Baker Dameron Eye Center Junior Tennis Tournament at Elizabeth Manor.

The tournament is scheduled Aug. 3-6 and is open to boys and girls between the ages of 10 through 18.

Entries will close on Friday, July 29. Entry fee is $18 for singles and $16 for doubles teams.

TRACK AWARD: Wilson High School's LaTasha Colander was named the Virginia winner of the Gatorade Circle of Champions girls track and field award.

She was among 51 state winners (including Washington, D.C.).

Monique Hennagan, a sprinter for Spring Valley High School in Columbia, S.C., was named the Southern Region winner, an 11-state area including Virginia. by CNB
