ASSISTANT CHIEF AMONG 18 PORTSMOUTH POLICE RETIREES

The following retired from the Portsmouth Police Department on July 1:

Lieutenant Colonel (Assistant Police Chief):

Howard K. Darden - Served 35 years, most recently as a lieutenant colonel and assistant police chief.

He has served in every area of the department except crime prevention.

He and his wife, Pearl, have already made a permanent move to their their retreat on Lake Gaston in Bracey, Va. (Story on page 14.)

Captain:

Richard Lee Thomas: Joined department in 1961; most recently a commanding officer in the Uniform Patrol Support Division; spent nine years in Internal Affairs; graduate of FBI National Academy; certified arson investigator

Plans to take off about a month and then open a private investigative service; also starting a windshield repair business, something he has done for about three years

Lieutenants:

Robert C. Beaman: Served 35 years; most recently in charge of payroll and personnel; spent five years with the K-9 unit and several as a street sergeant in Uniform Patrol; also served as an aide to two police chiefs; 35-year Good Conduct Medal recipient

Lt. Beverly L. Elliott: Joined department in 1960 and served most of his time in uniform patrol. ``I really enjoyed being on the street,'' he said. Served stints in central records and the warrant, detective and traffic bureaus; received several letters of commendation over the years

Lt. Richard K. Williams: Joined department's auxiliary in 1964 and became a police officer in 1970; most recently in charge of the detective bureau; also worked in administration and uniform patrol; was one of six homicide detectives nationwide who worked on the development of a computerized violent criminal apprehension program, which stemmed from the cases involving serial murderer Ted Bundy; received Medal of Honor in 1979 after an incident in which a suspect shot at him at point blank range

Plans to enjoy his boat and to continue work at Holiday Inn in Portsmouth, where he has been in charge of security for 22 years.

Sergeants:

Gerald L. Boone: Joined department in 1965, retired as commanding officer of Crime Prevention Unit; also worked in uniform patrol, investigations and traffic; received several letters of commendation, as well as awards from citizen groups

Has started a new career as a Portsmouth deputy sheriff assigned to the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program.

Donald Lewis: Served 29 years, most recently as commander of burglary squad; also worked in uniform patrol, the identification bureau, the warrant squad, central files and operations support; received a Good Conduct Medal and honored 24 years ago after he was wounded in the line of duty (shot three times by a shoplifter he was arresting)

Plans to take off about a month; thinking about going into business with friend.

Joseph R. Murray: Served 22 years; retired as sergeant of identification unit, where he spent half of his career; also spent time in uniform patrol, the warrant unit and the burglary and larceny squads; received letters of commendation

Looking into a new career, might go to school to become a tractor-trailer driver.

George L. Norton Jr.: Served 25 years; most recently in charge of the Crime Analysis Unit; served in uniform patrol and a special burglary unit and was commander of training bureau; was put on a special public relations assignment and he started the city government TV Channel 49; for last 15 years, has produced Christian broadcasting shows on Channel 27 including the Good Samaritan Hour on Sundays

Plans to spend more time in that area now that he's retired.

Detectives:

H. Arnold Black: Joined department in 1966; most recently was background investigator, polygraph examiner and police training instructor; spent several years as an internal affairs investigator and also worked in uniform patrol, the identification bureau and as hit-and-run investigator; received several Good Conduct awards

Has begun new career with the Virginia Port Authority police department

Thomas E. Dail: Joined department in 1969; most recently was assigned to the homicide and robbery division; also worked in uniform patrol, the motorcycle unit, the K-9 Corps and hit-and-run investigation; named a master patrolmen in 1987; received several Detective of the Month commendations

Plans to work as a private investigator and to continue the work he has done for the past 12 years as a taxidermist.

Officers:

Donald D. Ambrose: Served 28 years; well-known as a bicycle patrolman in the downtown area;

Tony Holland: Served 24 years; most recently assigned to uniform patrol; previously worked in narcotics unit and served as firearms instructor; received Good Conduct Medal and a Medal for Exceptional Police Performance; received Medal of Valor for his part in apprehending the man convicted of the murder of a store clerk

Plans to take a few months off before looking for part-time job.

Robert S. Hutto: Served 23 years; most recently assigned to uniform patrol.

K.H. Lewis: Served 27 years; most recently as coordinator of police vehicles and equipment; also served in vice and narcotics, the K-9 Corps, the detective bureau and a special squad that targeted high-crime areas; also worked three years with community crime fighters through a program that paired police officers with neighborhood patrols; received several medals for Good Conduct, two commendations for Outstanding Service and two awards from citizen groups; named Detective of the Month and Uniform Patrolman of the Month twice

Plans to take the summer off and then look for a part-time job.

Larry E. Lodge: Served 28 years, most recently in uniform patrol.
