FIRECRACKERS BLAST TOURNEY FOES

Shortstop Jaynene Allen of Deep Creek High blasted two home runs and was chosen the tourney's most valuable player as she led the Chesapeake Firecrackers to the National Softball Association state championship in Hampton July 2.

Playing in the 16-and-under division, the Firecrackers celebrated the Independence Day weekend with a 4-0 record in the double-elimination tourney with six other clubs. They trimmed Chesterfield's Screaming Eagles, 10-3, in the final game.

The Firecrackers were scheduled to compete in the USSSA state tourney in Chesterfield yesterday, according to coach Christi Childress.

GO UNDEFEATED: The Orioles, a girls' fast pitch softball team in Western Branch, are not only in a league of their own, they are in another zone.

Coached by Rick and Bonnie Frink and Carole Lilley, the club won all 18 games during the Little League's inaugural season in Western Branch and claimed the major division championship.

Members of the squad are Mel Canty, Lindsey Hodsden, Emilie Leavitt, Lauren Lilley, Lena Lilley, Zoe Mathias, Summer McGehee, Brooke Preas, Courtney Sapp, Lauren Scott, Dana Smith, Krystal Smith, Emily Snipes and Virginia Waldmann.

IT'S TOURNEY TIME: Five Great Bridge Baseball All-Star teams have started their district tournaments and the other nine clubs are scheduled to begin either this week or next.

The Bronco American League All-Stars were slated to play at Little Creek last Friday , and the four Pinto All-Star clubs were set to start their tourney at Suffolk's Youth Center complex Saturday. Great Bridge's Bronco National League All-Stars will host another event, beginning Tuesday.

Three Mustang outfits are divided into two sites. The American League All-Stars start play Wednesday at a site to be determined, but the other two teams - National and International League All-Stars - go direct to the sectional tournament which Great Bridge is hosting, beginning July 20.

The Pony American League All-Stars go to Western Branch, and the National League All-Stars travel to Lynnhaven for tourneys that begin Tuesday. Two Colt League All-Star teams begin play Thursday - A team in Great Bridge and B team in Suffolk.

No tournament site or date has been determined for Great Bridge's Palomino division All-Stars, according to association president Rob DeMara. District winners will go to the sectional tournaments and those winners will travel to region events. Region winners advance to zone tourneys and those champions go to the Pony League World Series.

SWIM SCORES: The Great Bridge Piranhas beat Club Brittany, 364 to 300, in the Dolphin Division of the Virginia Beach Swim League on July 2, and the Greenbrier Country Club Seahawks defeated Larkspur, 350 to 296, in the Porpoise Division.

ASSOCIATION TO MEET: The Indian River Athletic Association will have its regular meeting at the community center on Wednesday, beginning at 7 p.m. All members are encouraged to attend. For further information, contact Tyrone Vaughn at 424-4308 or Terri Cleveland at 436-2343.

OOPS: When we were bragging about the Marlins of Great Bridge's Mustang division last Sunday, we inadvertently left out a key player. C.J. Brandt is one of the squad members who helped the team register a 16-1 record. by CNB
