* Editor's note: While the list of retirees seemed to open the way
for two promotions to the rank of battalion chief, the recent employment
cuts announced by City Manager V. Wayne Orton included the elimination
of one battalion chief position.
In an interview July 1, Fire Chief Donald Newberry said, ``As of
today, they are both battalion chiefs,'' referring to twins James E.
Hoffler and John C. Hoffler, who received notification of their
promotions in June.
``The department is in a period of transition and no decision will be
made on this situation at least until July 12. No one will be laid off.
However, there may be a necessary reduction in rank.''
