Two men visiting a gunshot victim were shot as they left Sentara Norfolk General Hospital early Saturday.
An off-duty Norfolk police officer working as a security guard outside the emergency room spotted the fleeing gunmen and provided descriptions, which led to arrests a short time later.
The shooting occurred about 12:15 a.m. just outside the entrance to the waiting area of the hospital emergency room. The two victims walked through the doors when they were confronted on the walkway. Shots followed within moments.
A security officer inside the emergency room and the off-duty police officer arrived within seconds. The police officer saw the gunmen get into a car and drive off. He gave descriptions and the license plate number to police dispatchers.
A few minutes later, police spotted the car and made arrests.
One victim, a 20-year-old man who had come to check on his brother, was shot in the back. He was listed in stable condition Saturday afternoon. The other man, 24, was shot in the wrist. He was treated and released.
City police and hospital security provided protection Saturday for both shooting victims.
The hospital has security officer on duty around the clock throughout the medical complex. Off-duty city officers also are paid to patrol the parking lots and walkways 24 hours a day.
The motive for the shootings was unclear. No names or other details were released.
