Two Newport News teenagers have been charged in the fatal shooting of a Phoebus High School student, and a 17-year-old boy who had been arrested earlier has been cleared, police said.
A 15-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy were arraigned Monday in Hampton Juvenile and Domestic Court, said Hampton Sgt. Donnie Moore.
Police said the 15-year-old shot Joemel Dennis about 11:45 p.m. June 30. The boy is charged with capital murder, two counts of attempted robbery and three counts of illegal use of a firearm.
Police believe the 17-year-old was the shooter's accomplice. He is charged with murder, two counts of attempted robbery and three counts of illegal use of a firearm.
Their arrests Saturday cleared James Banton of Hampton. Police said Banton was released and charges of murder, attempted robbery and using a firearm during a felony had been dropped.
Dennis, 16, was Phoebus' starting quarterback and a point guard on the basketball team.
