Charles Emmette Adams III, 79, of the 4500 block of Winston Road, a retired bank president, died July 11, 1994, in a Portsmouth hospital.
Mr. Adams was born in Norfolk County. He started working with Merchant & Farmers Bank as a runner in 1931, worked his way up to president and retired from the bank after 47 years. In 1974 Merchants and Farmers bank was sold to Dominion Bank Shares at which time he took over as chairman of the board of Eastern Virginia. He served on the board of Dominion Bank Shares in Roanoke until retiring in 1978.
He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. He was president of the Portsmouth Kiwanis Club; president of the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce; president of Portsmouth Industrial Foundation; chairman of the board of Portsmouth General Hospital and later served as president for a number of years; president of Cedar Point Golf and Country Club and of Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club; served on the board of directors of Portsmouth Gas Co. and on the board of directors of Commonwealth Gas Co. of Richmond.
Survivors include his wife, Cecile Adams; one brother, John Ames Adams of Leominster, Mass.; five nieces and nephews; and 11 great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Granville Owens Adams.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk, by the Rev. Donald L. Seely. The family will receive friends at their home. Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, is handling arrangements.
