Jeff Capel will make his debut as Old Dominion's basketball coach Nov. 16 against Virginia at University Hall in Charlottesville.
The Preseason NIT announced first-round pairings Tuesday, and, as expected, ODU and U.Va. were pitted against each other. The winner will meet the Ohio University-Ohio State winner Nov. 18 in a game televised by ESPN.
``We kind of felt like we would play Virginia and Virginia concurred with that,'' ODU athletic director Jim Jarrett said. A regular-season game between the two teams has been dropped.
First-round games ESPN will broadcast are George Washington at Syracuse and New Mexico State at Southern California on Nov. 16, and Southwestern Louisiana at Memphis on Nov. 17.
The remaining first-round matchups for the 10th edition of the Preseason NIT are: Canisius at Penn; Kansas State at Alabama; and San Francisco at New Mexico.
By deciding to play ODU-U.Va. at University Hall, the NIT chose the smallest of three potential sites. University Hall's capacity is 8,457, Norfolk's Scope seats 10,232 and Richmond Coliseum - located roughly midway between the two schools - holds 12,500.
``I was hopeful they'd play the game in Richmond or at Scope,'' Jarrett said. ``I think it would have sold out in any of the places it was played.'' by CNB
