Kempsville's dominating defense proved to be the deciding factor in Wednesday's 54-20 blowout over Indian River in the Rising Stars Girls Basketball Summer League championship game.
Kempsville's first-half, full-court,man-to-man defense completely shut down Indian River offensively.
The Braves scored just three points in the first 20 minutes of play while the Chiefs chalked up 26.
Juanika Freeman - who has been Indian River's top scorer during summer league play - was held to four points by Kempsville's Charlette Fayton. They had been teammates in the All-Star game prior to the championship.
``Our defense was the key,'' said Kempsville coach Steve Douglas. ``We pressured their best player and that really made a difference.''
Kempsville's post players - Carrie Heath and Fayton - controlled the offensive attack in the first half and combined for 26 rebounds in the second.
Heath and Fayton each scored 10, while the Kempsville guards racked up 21 second-half points. Erin Duckett led all scorers with 11 and Toni Patilla chipped in 10.
In the All-Star game, the Sand Division routed the Water Division, 47-20. Churchland's Kizzy Butler led all scorers with 11. Butler sank three 3-pointera and had six steals.
Butler was named co-MVP of the tournament along with Salem's Misty Colebank, Deep Creek's Michelle Boyd and Kellam's Ann Marie Bowdoin.
