Retired Army Gen. Colin Powell, who has for years kept his political views veiled in secrecy, recently donated $1,000 to independent Marshall Coleman's campaign for the U.S. Senate.
The contribution, confirmed by Powell's office, comes several weeks after Powell said he could never vote for the Republican Party's nominee, Oliver North, the retired Marine lieutenant colonel with whom Powell served in the Reagan White House.
Powell's objections to North stemmed from North's role in the Iran-Contra affair.
Powell made the donation ``in his capacity as a private citizen,'' said Bill Smullen, a spokesman for the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Whether Powell will someday enter politics is a mystery. He is working on his autobiography and has said he will finish that work before making any decisions about his future.
