Martin Smith-Rodden, a resident of West Park View, was presented with the Portsmouth Medal for Heroism at Tuesday's City Council meeting. Smith-Rodden helped a woman who had been the victim of a carjacking and vicious assault. The woman ran to Smith-Rodden's back door screaming. He let her in, locked the door and comforted her until police and an ambulance arrived. Smith-Rodden works as a photographer with The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star.
Five people have been presented with the city's medal of heroism: Steven Johnston and Jason Herrington were co-recipients in 1990; Jeffrey Jones and Guy Mitchell received recognition in 1991; and Deby Jones was recognized in 1993.
