FEDERICO DIGS IDEA OF A FUTURE IN ARCHAEOLOGY

``LEARN FROM your past'' is one cliche 17-year old Rowena Federico lives by.

Rowena, a recent honor grad of Tallwood High in Virginia Beach, plans to study the way things were by pursuing a career in archaeology.

Besides idolizing Indiana Jones and Darkwing Duck, Rowena spends her time painting, drawing and indulging in her favorite dessert: Chocolate. She'll head to James Madison University in the fall to study archaeology.

Full name: Rowena Lynn Federico

Birthdate: December 3, 1976

Birthplace: Portsmouth, Va.

Occupation: I'm in limbo

Siblings: Rachel, 22

Education: High school honor grad - Tallwood High School

What is your idea of a perfect day off: Me, nature and no one else! Basically, lots of peace and quiet.

Last smart thing you did: Lemme get back to you. . .

Last dumb thing you did: Wrecking my car and ignorantly botching up the files on our home computer - the whole thing's inaccessible! (These both in one week.)

Favorite meal: Almost anything with beef, everything with chocolate - do you have a menu?

Favorite movies: ``The Fugitive,'' ``Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,'' ``Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.''

Favorite song: ``I'll Always Love You'' by Taylor Dayne.

Favorite singer/band: Gloria Estefan in Spanish.

Last book read: ``Like Water for Chocolate'' by Laura Esquivel.

Hobbies: Visual art, studying different religions, reading.

Best date you've been on: When my boyfriend took me to my very first musical, ``Man of La Mancha,'' with balcony seats, then asked me out afterward.

Worst date you've been on: My beau and I decided to have take-out Chinese at the park. We opened up all the little boxes and discovered we had no forks.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?: When I get angry enough to yell at someone, I yell, then start to laugh. I wish I didn't do it but there's just something that ends up being ridiculous about the whole thing.

If you could change one thing about your parents, what would it be?: I wish they'd be more supportive of me and my artwork because they're supportive in everything else. I also wish my dad would stop scaring my boyfriend!

Secret vice: Everybody knows my vices, but I guess ice cream. I can never have enough! Especially Uncle Harry's chocolate ice cream with Kit Kat in a waffle cone.

Favorite restaurant: For food, La Galleria. For atmosphere, Front Street.

Favorite place to shop: Lerner's and Waldenbooks.

Your favorite night out on the town: Dinner, a musical and a walk.

Favorite TV shows: ``Darkwing Duck,'' ``Star Trek: The Next Generation,'' ``Mystery Science Theatre 3000.''

Last vacation: Vacation?. . .

Pets: Two long-dead Siberian hamsters. Mine ate my sister's, then died of indigestion.

Best job: Sorting mail for President Clinton.

Worst job: Helping Hands Day Camp. The kid I worked with was a terror.

What achievements are you most proud of?: My artistic ability and somehow managing to graduate with honors.

What would you like to be in 10 years?: Alive, for one thing. Happy, secure. Maybe married. My dreams include starting a business with my sister, being the next Indiana Jones and teaching religion and philosophy in high school.

If you could change one thing in America, what would it be and why?: I'd ditch Barney and The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Seriously, I'd fight prejudice and excessive feminists. (They really get on my nerves! I'm feminist only to an extent.)

Heroes and role models: Hero - Indiana Jones; role models - Audrey Hepburn and Darkwing Duck.

Your most unique trait: I think my ability to use common sense (or to make sense, for that matter) has an on/off switch that I can't control.

Best subject: Art (Kinda sad . . . )

Worst subject: You name it. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
