PILOT DEPUTY MANAGING EDITOR GOING TO KANSAS

Janet S. Weaver, a deputy managing editor of The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star, is leaving the papers to become managing editor of The Eagle in Wichita, Kan.

The Eagle, a Knight-Ridder paper, hired Weaver after an eight-month national search.

``We were seeking someone who could move us to the next level of thinking and creative work, particularly in the area of public journalism,'' said Davis Merritt Jr., editor of The Eagle. ``She is that person.''

Weaver joined the Pilot in 1989. She worked as a city hall reporter, city editor and planning editor before being named deputy managing editor in charge of sports and features in January 1993. She has also worked as an assistant city editor at the Miami Herald; reporter and city editor at the Irving (Texas) Daily News; and courts reporter and assistant city editor at The Stuart (Fla.) News.

Today is her last day at the Pilot. She will take over day-to-day operations of The Eagle newsroom next month. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
