A fire that started aboard a garbage truck caused westbound lanes of Interstate 264 to be closed intermittently for three hours Thursday morning.
The trouble began at 6:39 a.m. when the driver of a truck owned by Chambers Waste Systems of Virginia noticed the garbage he was carrying was on fire, state police said.
The driver pulled off the road about a half-mile from the Merrimac Avenue exit so he could dump the trash. As he began unloading the garbage close to the guardrail, it began to spill onto the highway, forcing officials to close the westbound lanes, police said.
When the fire was out about 9 a.m., one lane was opened to traffic briefly, but it was closed again for an hour when cleanup crews arrived. Both lanes were opened about 10 a.m. by CNB
