Having twice visited the Disney World complex in Orlando, Fla., I have witnessed first hand the horrendous traffic jams and the sprawling growth of motels, fast-food establishments and the ``honky-tonk'' atmosphere generated by such attractions. Moreover, I have heard misrepresentations and distortions of our nation's beginnings and early history.
I object to the proposed Disney theme park in Northern Virginia.
In Disney's depiction of history, our country is purported to have begun in 1620, when the Mayflower arrived at Plymouth Rock. No mention is made of the 1607 settlement of Jamestown or the fact that the Virginia House of Burgesses was established in 1619, a year before the Pilgrims landed.
Virginia abounds in history and historical attractions, including sacred battlefields in the area of the proposed construction. No further embellishment or desecration is needed.
The park's proximity to the District of Columbia would only add more gridlock to the state's most congested highways.
