W. GARRETT HUME, M.D.

W. Garrett Hume, 80, husband of Anne Bosley Hume and a resident of Concord Wharf, Va., died at Northampton-Accomack Memorial Hospital on July 15, 1994.

Born in Wilmington, Del., he was the son of the late Clarence Austin Hume and Katherine Montgomery Hume. Prior to his retirement to the Eastern Shore, Dr. Hume was medical director of the DuPont Chambers Works Hospital in Carneys Point, N.J. He was graduated from the University of Delaware and received his medical degree from the Temple University School of Medicine in 1941. He did graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins Hospital, the University of Cincinnati and Cornell University Medical School. In 1958, he was elected a Fellow of The Industrial Medical Association.

He was a member of the staff of Salem County Memorial Hospital and was a past president of the Salem County, N.J., Medical Society. He was a trustee of the New Jersey Heart Association.

Dr. Hume was a founding member, vestryman and register at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Woodstown, N.J. Since his retirement, he had been a trustee of Hungars Episcopal Church and was a former vestryman and register.

During World War II, Dr. Hume was a flight surgeon with the U.S. Army Air Force with the rank of major. He did flight evacuation work in combat zones in Africa, Italy, Yugoslavia and Germany from 1943 to 1945 and received the Soldier's Medal for Valor in Italy in 1944.

Dr. Hume conducted a private practice in lower Delaware and Maryland until joining the staff at the DuPont Chambers Works Medical Division in 1950. In 1948, he was commended in Drew Pearson's column ``Washington Merry-Go-Round'' for his work as a rural physician.

Funeral services will be held at Hungars Episcopal Church Monday, July 18, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Gordon B. Davis officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

In addition to his wife, Dr. Hume is survived by three children, Dr. W. Garrett Hume III of Greenville, N.C., Cynthia Hume Henderson of Wilmington, Del. and John Austin Hume of Concord, Wharf; a sister, Kathryn Hume Ramsay of Wilmington; and 11 grandchildren.
