SUFFOLK SURPRISE: WORKERS GET PEEK AT OTHERS' EVALUATIONS

Some Suffolk workers got a surprising peek at their peers' report cards Friday when the city sent out its annual job-evaluation slips.

At least four workers found job evaluations on other city employees.

The evaluations, about the size of an index card, listed the co-workers' performance ratings - private information usually discussed behind closed doors or locked away in filing cabinets.

City officials said the slip-up was a simple error in the annual review process.

``Last year we didn't have any mistakes,'' said Lee Acors, city finance director. ``This year, we did.''

Personnel director LaDonna Wade said she apologized to the employees affected.

All 600 city workers have access to salary records, but it usually takes some digging through public documents. Only supervisors and the employee, though, are supposed to see an evaluation rating, which ranges from 1 (poor) to 5 (substantially exceeds expectations).

The bottom of the evaluation slip reads: ``If you have any questions, please contact your supervisor.''

Employees who got the mixed-up cards did.

One city worker, who asked not to be identified, received appraisals for two different people. Others received their own appraisal and that of another employee.

``It's just embarrassing,'' said another worker who received information on a colleague. ``I mean, what if I was to find out the person next to me was making twice what I'm making?'' by CNB
