3 KILLED IN AREA IN 5 1/2-HOUR PERIOD 2 DIE IN CHESAPEAKE INCIDENTS; MAN FOUND DEAD IN NORFOLK

It was a deadly period between 10 p.m. Thursday and 3:30 a.m. Friday. Five and one-half hours. Three people killed in South Hampton Roads.

Chesapeake police received a call just after 10 p.m. about a domestic dispute in the 1200 block of Cedar Mill Square. When they arrived at the brick townhouse near Greenbrier Elementary School they found the body of Sharon J. Gilcrest, 28, who had been stabbed to death.

Witnesses told police they saw Gilcrest's former boyfriend, Lloyd Pettis, 37, drive away from Gilcrest's home Thursday night.

Pettis and Gilcrest had an on-again, off-again relationship for eight years, police said.

Pettis surrendered to deputies at the city jail about 3 a.m. He was charged with first-degree murder and was held without bail.

Norfolk police received a call about 2 a.m. Friday concerning a gunshot victim in the 900 block of South Main St. in the Berkley section. They found the body of Steven Atkins, 34, of the 1100 block of Culpepper St. in the stairway of an apartment building.

Police said they had no suspect and did not know the motive for the shooting. They asked that anyone with information call Norfolk Crime Line at 441-5100.

About 3:30 a.m. Friday, another shooting occurred in Chesapeake.

Linwood Freeman, 73, of Gates County, N.C., was visiting a friend's apartment in the 4200 block of Reid St. when he was shot in the chest by someone who had knocked on the door, police said.

Freeman was a frequent guest of the young woman who lived in the apartment, neighbors said.

``I heard the shot, and then I heard a bunch of people running down the stairs, but I thought it was just kids playing with firecrackers,'' said one neighbor, who asked not to be identified. ``The next thing I know the police were in the hall, and I heard a woman hollering.''

Police issued an arrest warrant for Randolph Carr, 19, believed to live in either Norfolk or Chesapeake. Carr, who also goes by the name Randy Cobb, should be considered armed and dangerous, police said. No motive was given, but police said robbery had not been ruled out. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
