State police arrested a 16-year-old Newport News youth Thursday and charged him with two felonies and three misdemeanors after his 1988 Mazda veered off an eastbound lane of I-64.
Trooper T.L. Embry was responding to the single-vehicle accident, which occurred around 4 p.m. near the Colonial National Historical Parkway exit, when he spotted a handgun in the car and smelled marijuana.
Police said the trooper discovered a one-pound bag of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
The youth, who was not identified because of his age, was charged with possession of a handgun, possession of marijuana with intent to sell, possession of a concealed weapon, removal of a serial number from a handgun and reckless driving.
The Mazda was impounded.
