INCONSIDERATE BOARD

I would like to comment on the lack of consideration displayed by the Board of Commissioners at their monthly meetings.

The meeting begins at 9 a.m. They take a 10-minute break and are out ``eating doughnuts and drinking coffee'' for one-half hour. They are in ``executive session,'' mind you, but County Manager Terry Wheeler refuses to let reporters into a ``public'' room. Protector that he is, he works for the citizens of the county. Someone should have taken the initiative to physically remove him from his guardpost.

The board adjourns for lunch at 10:45 a.m. and are gone for hours! Meetings were recently restored to semi-monthly due to lack of time.

These meetings are a display of nothing more than sideshow techniques for those who take time out of their day to attend and then are treated like their time is not important. No wonder attendance is low.

We do not worship members of this board - we elect them to serve us, not to serve them - and we should be given the respect due us as citizens of Dare County.

Joe Hassell

Manns Harbor MEMO: Editor's note: Mr. Hassell's wife, Shirley Hassell, in May won the

Democratic primary for a seat on the Dare County Board of Commissioners.

She is opposed by Republican Charles Elms in the general election.
