Things of particular interest to David P. Lokie (pronounced Lock-key) include family, University of North Carolina basketball and the number nine.
That figure has frequently appeared in Lokie's life. His wedding anniversary is May 9, his daughter was born Sept. 9 and his birthday is Aug. 9.
Just how often does he attend UNC basketball games? Definitely more than nine times and probably closer to 999.
``Every chance I get and every time my friend Emmanuel Upton, an Atlantic Coast Conference official, invites me to a game as his guest,'' said Lokie, who doesn't miss many televised games.
Lokie is active in the United Way of Chesapeake. He also is a member of the Great Bridge Jaycees and serves as a deacon at Great Bridge Presbyterian Church.
``As senior high youth adviser, I spend two hours a week with the youth of the church, discussing current events in their lives,'' he said.
He also makes an effort to help them understand the importance of family and church values.
``I try to be a friend and create some fun,'' said Lokie, adding that he was fortunate to grow up with family, friends, teachers and coaches who were positive influences in his life.
``This helped me to develop good work habits and strong values,'' he said. ``I want to give back to the youth of the church some of that same support that I received. Hopefully, this circle will continue.''
He plays basketball and softball with Chesapeake Parks and Recreation teams.
