CAUTION: ARTISTS WORKING

Leaning on shovels and a push broom and watching a groaning Bobcat earth mover creeping into position, this group, with all due respect, looks like any road crew. However, they are a local artist, three museum curators and others. And, they are in the process of constructing. But it's not another highway, it's art. The art-in-progress, titled ``Treading Water,'' is by sculptor Laurel Quarberg. It is set for opening at 6:30 p.m. Friday and continues through Sept. 11 at the Virginia Beach Center for the Arts. The art installation, or site-specific exhibition, is in many ways like a real construction project. In addition to the pure labor and machinery needed to create it, it consists of a 60-foot trough constructed of PVC pipe and suspended in the center of the gallery. Twelve water-filled and gilded counterweights balance the extended trough, which is filled with oil and floating candles. The floor of the entire gallery will be covered with a three- inch base of salt. The public is invited to walk through this new exhibit - plastic booties provided - and consider the artist's questions of balance and fragility. Want to know more? Call the Center at 425-0000.
