A man who police believe was intoxicated and apparently stepped in front of oncoming traffic was struck by a car Saturday afternoon and died a few hours later.
James Roberts, 31, of the first block of River View, was struck at 5:05 p.m. as he walked in the 1100 block of London Blvd. His body was pinned under the car that hit him and was dragged about 80 feet before the driver could stop.
Roberts was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he died at 8:50 p.m. Tests revealed he had an ``extremely high blood alcohol'' count, police said.
The 32-year-old driver of the car had no warning that a pedestrian was in the roadway, police said. She had been following a pickup and her first hint of trouble came when the pickup suddenly swerved to avoid the pedestrian. She had no time to turn. Police said no charges were expected.
