DUO LEADS BOOKERS PAST BAYSIDE

Kenny Brown and Shawn Wilson combined for 15 of Booker T. Washington's final 17 points as the second-seeded Bookers held off top-seeded Bayside, 77-75, in an exciting Norfolk Summer League final.

The game, played at Booker T., marked the conclusion of the 11-team league, a circuit formed this year to fill the summer hoops void created in Norfolk when Catholic High moved to Virginia Beach.

The lead in Saturday's final changed hands several times until a dazzling series of plays by Wilson swung the tide toward the Bookers. The rising senior broke a 60-60 tie with a layup, blocked a Bayside shot at the other end, then had the crowd of about 100 on their feet by tipping in Brown's alley-oop pass.

``Last year I didn't take over games too much,'' Wilson said. ``This year, they want me to be the go-to guy.''

Booker T. Washington's DeWayne Jacobs led all scorers with 22 points. Wilson scored 21 and Brown added 16. The Bookers also got nine points - from Green Run transfer Ashley Berry, last seen lighting up Ferguson for the Stallions in the Eastern Region tournament.

LaShawn Jones paced Bayside with 20 points. Donald Michell chipped in with 18, and Shawn Blassingall scored 16.

The regular-season champion Marlins, who beat Booker T. Washington by five during the regular season, were without two key contributors Saturday, including 6-8 Marcus Riddick, en route to Los Angeles Saturday to play in an AAU tournament.

Booker T. Washington reached the final by knocking off Maury, 51-48. Bayside trounced Ahoskie in the semifinals, 72-52. Earlier in the day, the Marlins also dispatched Oscar Smith, 58-56, in the final first-round game.
