Persistent thunderstorms, most with impressive lightning displays, pounded Hampton Roads into the early hours today, leaving more than 2,500 Virginia Power customers in the dark.
Additionally, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for portions of western Hampton Roads after upwards of 4 inches of rain fell in some areas.
The storms began at midafternoon - not unusual at this time of year. But summer storms usually die down after sunset. Not these. Storms continued over much of Eastern Virginia beyond midnight.
Area fire departments responded to several cause sparked by lightning strikes, but no major fires were reported.
The threat of storms will be with us for several days. Today should be partly sunny with scattered showers and thunderstorms and a high in the low 90s. Tonight should be partly cloudy with a 30 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms and the low in the mid 70s.
Tuesday is expected to be partly sunny with a chance of showers or thunderstorms and a high around 90 with the chance of rain 30 percent. by CNB
