The executive director of the struggling child-advocacy group Kids First Inc. has been appointed to the Governor's Advisory Commission on Military Affairs.
Cynthia Grafton, 33, of Shawboro, a U.S. Marine veteran, will join 26 other members who advise Gov. James B. Hunt Jr. on ways to support military families and promote North Carolina defense facilities.
Grafton took the helm of Kids First, formerly Northeastern Children's Co-op, earlier this year. The group, which focuses on helping victims of child sexual abuse, lost a key funding source last month and is scrambling to pay operating expenses with a growing base of local support, Grafton said.
Also appointed to the military commission was Floyd Spellman, 78, of Elizabeth City. Spellman is retired executive director of the Roanoke Skills Training Center and currently serves as secretary/treasurer of the Roanoke Missionary Baptist Association.
The commission is scheduled to meet next week in Raleigh, members said. by CNB
