MAN KILLED, TWO WOUNDED AFTER DISPUTE AT CYCLE RALLY

A 43-year-old Kill Devil Hills man has been killed in a shooting in Cumberland County, sheriff's officials said Monday.

The victim was Daniel Cain, who worked for a Nags Head landscaping company. He was attending a Harley-Davidson ``Easy Riders Rodeo'' rally at the Cumberland County Civic Center near Fayetteville over the weekend.

Cain was near a beverage machine at Roadway Inn on U.S. Route 301 South when a teenager shot him in the head and killed him about 3 a.m. Sunday, Cumberland County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jerry England said.

A Kitty Hawk woman and a Raleigh man attending the rally were wounded at the motel, England said.

``An argument occurred,'' England said.

``The guy apparently just shot into a crowd in the breezeway of the motel,'' said Doug Carter of Harbinger, a member of the Outer Banks Motorcycle Association who rode with Cain. ``From what other people who were there told me, it was a random thing.''

At 6 a.m. Sunday, sheriff's deputies arrested Orlander Johnson Jr., 19, of Fayetteville and charged him with first degree murder.

Vivian Turner, 45, of Kitty Hawk was in satisfactory condition at the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center Monday afternoon with a gunshot wound of the abdomen. Robert Sears, 32, of Raleigh was released from the hospital after being treated for a shoulder wound. Turner and Sears were with Cain when he was killed.

``Dan was a kind of quiet guy who kept to himself,'' said Carter, who is planning a memorial motorcycle run for Cain. ``He weren't the type that would ever hurt nobody or cause something like this to happen to himself.

``He believed in ride and let ride,'' Carter said. ``Live and let live.''
