Jessica Zaganczyk had a 9 a.m. match Monday, but her wake-up call didn't come until about 9:45.
Just in time, as it turned out, for Zaganczyk to rally from a one-set deficit and overtake Ali Weber, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, in the second round of the USTA Girls 16s Clay Court National Championships at the Virginia Beach Tennis & Country Club.
The unseeded Zaganczyk, a Virginia Beach resident, joins 15 of the 16 seeds in today's third round. Ninth-seeded Lorraine Bittles of Nashville, Tenn., the lone upset victim, took a 6-1, 6-1 beating from Stephanie Hazlett of Grandview, Ind.
Rain washed out Monday's scheduled doubles matches.
Zaganczyk said errors crippled her play early in Monday's match, and it wasn't until the break between the first and second sets that she got her act together.
``I had to sit down and get out a lot of frustrations in that 90 seconds,'' she said. ``But as soon as I sat down, I knew I was going to win that second set. I wasn't going out in two (sets).''
Zaganczyk then cut down her mistakes, cracked several winners and won going away.
Jenny Miller, the 13th seed, gets the next crack at Zaganczyk, the only South Hampton Roads player in the field, at noon today. Zaganczyk won when the two met in the Easter Bowl 14s two years ago, but Miller has had more success in the 16s.
In other action Monday, top seed Jody Anglin of The Bronx, N.Y., lost just two games while dispatching Katherine Ashley of Chestnut Hill, Mass., and seventh-seeded Ivy Wang of Haverford, Pa., continued her dominating run with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Keren Apra of Fremont, Calif.
Wang has yet to lose a game in the tournament. by CNB
