A 20-year-old woman was arrested Tuesday for leaving her 14-month-old daughter unsupervised in a bathtub where the toddler drowned, police said.
Tina Marie Peters of the 400 block of Lisa Square was charged with a form of child endangerment and released after promising to appear for trial.
Police spokesman Mike Carey said police and rescue workers were sent to Peters' apartment Monday at 5:45 p.m. They found the baby girl submerged in bath water.
The child, Ashley L. Peters, was taken to the trauma center at Virginia Beach General Hospital and later transferred to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters in Norfolk, where she died shortly before 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Carey said the mother left the infant in the bathtub with her 2-year-old sister. When the mother returned, the baby had drowned.
