MAN CHARGED IN FRIEND'S DEATH

A 23-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in the strangulation of a female friend after an argument in her Bute Street home.

Police said Frederico M. Gilmore of 3rd Avenue in downtown Suffolk strangled 34-year-old Laura Mae Joyner in the late evening of July 8.

They would not release details of the case or say how they were able to link Gilmore to Joyner's death, except that the two knew each other.

Joyner's body was discovered the next day by a relative after Joyner failed to report for work at a nursing home. Police did not consider her death a murder until the state medical examiner determined two days later that she had been strangled.

Gilmore was arrested Monday in Portsmouth. He has prior convictions for burglary and grand larceny stemming from the 1990 burglary of a Washington Street business.

Gilmore was in Western Tidewater Regional Jail Tuesday awaiting a preliminary hearing Sept. 20.
