CITIZENS SHOULD BE ABLE TO DECIDE WHO'S MAYOR

On Friday, July 1, the Norfolk City Council selected Paul Fraim as mayor and Paul Riddick as vice mayor. And once again this system of selecting reflects the need to have the citizens of Norfolk to elect its mayor.

Former vice mayor Joseph Green wanted the position as mayor, as he did in 1992. He has served a number of years on council with distinctions. Mr. Green should not have been denied the opportunity to serve as Norfolk's mayor. This is a disgrace.

Mayor Fraim is my friend and I and others will work with him; however, this should not have been his time to become mayor. If the citizens of Norfolk had had the opportunity to vote, I am certain that Green would have won.

I will continue to push for legislation enabling the citizens of Norfolk to elect their mayor and not seven people in a private meeting.
