4 WESTERN TIDEWATER ENTITIES RECEIVE VIRGINIA ARTS GRANTS

The Suffolk Art League, the Miles B. Carpenter Museum in Waverly, the City of Suffolk and Sussex County are recent beneficiaries of grants from the Virginia Commission for the Arts.

Statewide, grants totaling nearly $1.5 million were awarded this month to 134 non-profit arts organizations, schools and local governments for operating expenses and/or specific cultural programs.

The Suffolk Art League received $1,700 for operating expenses. The league also is expected to get a share of the $2,910 in grants received by the city.

The city will announce allocation of its funds next month. Last year, the league and Riddick's Folly were the recipients.

``We'll use the money to continue our exhibits program for local and regional artists to show their work,'' said Linda Bunch, administrative assistant for the Suffolk Art League. ``It will also be used for educational programs, to help pay visiting artists and for publicity.''

The Suffolk Fine Arts Commission dispenses the money received by the city.

``Any cultural, arts-related organization can apply,'' said chairman Betty Glasscock. ``We don't have a lot of money, so we have to spread it around as far as we can.''

The Miles B. Carpenter Museum in Waverly received $1,700 in grants from the state. The money will be used for operating expenses.

Sussex County also received $2,910 in grant money, which will be evenly divided between the Carpenter Museum and the Wakefield Foundation, which offers a variety of art exhibits.

The foundation is raising money for an elevator to make the building accessible to the physically handicapped.

The Virginia Commission for the Arts is a state agency that supports the arts through funding from the Virginia General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts. ILLUSTRATION: File photo
