Car phones are a curse.
Oh, sure, some people just can't live without them - although they did for many, many years. But the real question is, how many others will be hurt or killed because of them?
If you've driven anywhere lately, you've witnessed someone chatting away on the phone: at the crowded approach to a tunnel, in the merge lane of Portsmouth Boulevard, zooming past on the interstate. These phone addicts are everywhere, and it's frightening. They wouldn't know it if a truck the size of a football field were barreling down on them.
Mobile phones can be great enhancers of safety, to call for help when necessary, and there's no problem with such users. The problem is with those who spend their lives on the phone and endanger others.
It's hard enough to navigate the highways when everyone's paying attention. But when Ma Bell is a permanent passenger, it may not be long before someone is dialing DIS-ASTR. The solution: Hang up and drive. by CNB
