Philadelphia-based Bell Atlantic earned $415.4 million, or 95 cents per share, in the quarter ended June 30, compared with $362.6 million, or 83 cents per share, a year earlier. The company had a special charge of $22.9 million, or 9 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter for retiring debt. Second-quarter revenue was $3.40 billion, up 5 percent from $3.22 billion a year ago due partly to a 54.1 percent increase in its wireless customer base.
