BEACH FUGITIVE CRASHES CAR, STEALS ANOTHER

A man who had crashed his car during a police chase Wednesday forced a woman and her child from their car, stole it and fled.

The incident began about 10:40 a.m. when officers stopped a car believed to have been used in thefts from vehicles in the Chick's Beach area. The car was stopped at Pleasure House Road and Shore Drive.

Officers tried to arrest the driver, identified as Derek T. Fritzinger, 26, but he struggled and broke free. He then drove off with officers in pursuit.

Fritzinger's car went off the road and crashed at Diamond Springs Road and Wesleyan Drive moments later. Police said Fritzinger leaped from the car and ran across the intersection to a car stopped at a traffic light.

The driver, Lillie K. VanOstrand, 33, of the 800 block of Aragona Blvd., was forced from the car with her 5-month-old daughter. Neither was hurt. Fritzinger got in the car and fled.

Police have issued warrants charging Fritzinger with carjacking and escape from custody. He is described as white, 5 feet 8 inches tall, about 150 pounds, with brown hair, hazel eyes and a moustache.

The stolen car is a 1984 silver Pontiac Sunbird four-door with Virginia license plate number DP9366.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Solvers at 427-0000.
